Each character grows, developing new aspects of their personality and finding out just how far they’ll go to achieve their aims, whether anyone else likes it or not. In this sequel to Everlost (2006), Shusterman has once again created a world that is beautiful and imaginative yet increasingly eerie and grim. Allie can move back to the real world by hijacking the body of a living being, but she can’t move on into the light, even if she wanted to.

Nick the Chocolate Ogre wants to help the children of Everlost reach the light at the end of the tunnel. The biomes are connected through a brook that reaches far into every biome. Everlost, the limbo land of dead children, is at war. It consists of a patchwork of biomes, most of which inhabited. If you were on the fence about getting into this trilogy, I can confirm that it holds up beyond the first book, and I can’t wait to get into the next one.Everlost is where children go when they die, if they miss their chance to go into the light or are just not ready to transition into the hereafter. Everwilde is the realm where the enchantimals dwell and which they are tasked to protect. If you’re into YA books, and liked Everlost, you’ll love Everwild. So I guess that’s a pretty good sign for the book. But at the time, I couldn’t put the book down. I shouldn’t have… I paid the price for it the next day.
But I read the last quarter of this book in a single sitting. I still have limits I’ve imposed upon my reading time daily-no more than half an hour at a time, just to allow my eyes to rest as I recover from GBS. Hopefully someone will go back and fix the Kindle version of Everlost. I don’t think I found any glaring errors in this one. Writers really learn to appreciate when another author accomplishes this feat with such a large cast of characters-it’s one of the hardest things to do in writing. The characters are so very identifiable through their unique traits… my wife and I actually discussed that there may be no other book (short of Harry Potter), where the characters are so marked by distinguishing characteristics.
